They wound up initially offering Schroedinger the position, but, for one reason or other, he didn’t accept. Besides, Ames wanted Gerhard Schroedinger for the job instead. Ames, the then-provost and future university president, thought that this was more than Einstein was worth and more than the university could afford. He wanted to offer him $10,000, a considerable sum at the time, if he came for a year. Goodnow wanted to bring him to Hopkins as a professor. Sometime in the 1920s, Einstein met Goodnow, who was the president of JHU at the time, at a conference in Berlin. I don’t know if Einstein was ever on the Hopkins campus, but there is an interesting story about Hopkins and Einstein.
